About natural fragances

1. What do we say, when we say 100% natural?

All essential oils and raw materials used in our formulations are pure, natural and come from plants that grow in our Mediterranean landscapes. You will not find woods from distant lands or roses from Damascus. All are produced with artisanal processes. Some, from plants collected in the wild and distilled by us; others, from local or national producers. We do not use any type of synthetic fixation, nor color or density correctors derived from petroleum.

2. Does a natural perfume last as much as a synthetic one?

If a perfume is really 100% natural, it is impossible for it to achieve the same permanence of a totally synthetic fragrance. Synthetic fragrances that stick to your skin, covering all olfactory signals that are not their own, and do not leave you until you have showered, are not of this world.

In nature, nothing stays for that long. Everything transforms and adapts to the circumstances. The same goes for nature’s smells, and it’s good that it is this way.

Our 100% natural fragrances are alive and in motion. They adapt, evolve and breathe with you, depending on your skin type. They smell good, and they feel good.

In traditional perfumery at the end of the 19th century, when synthetic molecules were not yet popular, a good perfume had to last at least four hours. All our fragrances far exceed this goal, even exceeding fourteen hours in the case of LANDSCAPE SCENTS and ESSAIS.

3. Do natural perfumes have a gender?

All perfumes are gender free. The gender ascribed to  perfumes is a cultural issue constructed as a result of marketing campaigns. There is no scientific evidence to support the idea that women like roses and floral notes and men like woods and leather.

What is true is that natural perfumes adapt to each person’s skin, interacting with the unique pH and bacterial layer of each person. Our formulations are only completed once they interact with each individual’s skin, combining with their olfactory personality. Sometimes enhancing it; other times, softening it. But without canceling it out or covering it up.

That said, it is not a question of gender, but of personality.

4. Do you wear and enjoy Bravanariz perfumes the same way as you would any other perfume?

Our natural perfumes and colognes are made to be worn on the skin and hair, like any other perfume. Tradition tells us that the most common points are on the neck and wrists, but following the logic of areas with greater blood flow (and therefore greater evaporation), we prefer to recommend the inner elbow crease, as this location is much more appropriate for personal enjoyment. Our perfumes are not made to seduce others, but to re-conquer ourselves and help us connect with nature.

The great quality of our natural raw materials allows you to wear our perfumes as many times as you want in the same day. As many times as you need to connect with you and your environment.

There is no need to talk about the benefits of not putting petroleum products on our skin. We prefer to invite you to discover the wonderful properties of plants and their essential oils and how they affect our mood.

5. What is the difference between natural and synthetic essential oils?

The most important thing is to understand that no one is better than the other. It’s not about that. Synthetic oils, as the word indicates, are a synthesis of the natural essential oil. For example, if rosemary essential oil has more than 130 olfactory molecules, its synthetic version has only three. We could say that the synthetic version is more “pure” or that it has been cleaned of impurities. We could also say that natural oil is more complex, sophisticated and rich in nuances. Simplifying, synthesizing, isolating and classifying is a very human trait, but nature is delightfully complex, and although it is hard for us to admit it, so are we. At BRAVANARIZ, we celebrate this complexity, and that is why we use 100% natural essential oils.

6. Do natural perfumes contain fewer allergens than synthetic perfumes?

No way. Many allergies are caused by molecules present in the plant kingdom, so both natural and synthetic essential oils can cause allergies. It is important, if you are aware of certain allergies or incompatibilities, to duly consult the list of ingredients and, if possible, try the perfume on your skin before buying it. Beyond allergies, though, there are effects caused by some synthetic molecules or petroleum products, which you will never experience with a 100% natural perfume.

7. How much of your raw materials are wild harvested?

The first thing we realized when starting the project was that we couldn’t produce all of our raw materials from wild-harvested plants. It would have been a serious blow to the balance and biodiversity of our landscapes. For this reason, together with Sandra Saura Mas, an environmental biologist at the UAB, we designed a Sustainable Collection Protocol, which serves as a guide for all our actions.

We currently distill some essential oils from our most common and abundant plants such as rosemary, lavender and fennel. But we basically produce tinctures and hydrolates, for which much less of the plant is needed.

Tinctures form, in some cases, 80% of our products, since we use them as the alcoholic base of all our formulations.

8. What is a tincture?

Tinctures are made by macerating the plant in alcohol for a minimum of 40 days. The alcohol acts as a solvent and captures many of the qualities of the plant, such as its aroma. After filtration, the result is a very aromatic alcohol with intense colors. At BRAVANARIZ, instead of working with neutral and odorless alcoholic bases, we play with combinations of tinctures from wild-harvested plants, which give our perfumes an unmistakable personality and strength.

9. What is a hydrolate?

The hydrolate is the co-product of distillation. It is the water that, when evaporated, carries the properties of the plant and its essential oils. When this vapor condenses abruptly, the oils separate from the water (which we call hydrolate from now on). Apart from having the inherent properties of the best distilled water (such as a perfect mineral balance) that refreshes and hydrates, the hydrolate preserves some of the benefits of the plant, such as its aroma. It is the closest thing to the smell of the fresh plant. At BRAVANARIZ we use pure hydrolates produced by steam distillation, instead of tap water, to lower the alcoholic grade of our colognes. That, of course, gives our products an unparalleled aromatic quality and leaves your skin feeling soft and velvety, which is quite unlike the usual colognes.

Bee Brave

BEE BRAVE is a Bravanariz project aimed at promoting the biodiversity of our natural environments.
Conceived and financed by BRAVANARIZ, it is carried out in collaboration with various actors, both private (farm owners, beekeepers, scientists) as well as landscape protection associations.

Our first solid perfume

Mel olfactory disgresion

MEL is our first solid perfume and the result of a long collaboration with bees, our winged harvest companions. Made from organic beeswax (from the hives installed in our Bee Brave pilot project in Can Bech de Baix) and sweet almond oil from organic farming. Formulated only with essential oils from honey plants, which serve as food for our environmental heroes. Soft and balsamic, delicately aromatic. Its warm and welcoming background will make you feel good, with yourself and with your surroundings.

MEL is our sincere tribute to these fascinating social beings who have silently taught us for years the art of combining plants and aromas. Not only are they the natural perfumers of our landscape, but thanks to their tireless collecting work, they ensure the biodiversity of our landscapes.

Objectives

Objetive # 1

The main idea is to combine minimum intervention with maximum mutual benefit. We have to let Nature do her thing. We are just there to assist and
escort her.

First phase

-The first important thing is to recover the optimal state of the Prat de Dall. For this reason, we have to remove the poplar trees and clean away brambles and other bushes. We also need to cover the holes from fallen trees in order to level the ground well, so that it can be mowed.

-Along with this cleaning work, we will place the hives. Not on the prat de dall, but some 500m away (limit of the usual minimum radius of action for honey bees) , on a shrubland of aromatics, so we also give a chance to all the other pollinators to also take advantage of the prat de dall’s biodiversity.

Objetive # 2

Second phase

-Monitoring and maintenance of both lines of action: the hives (health of the bees, quantity and quality of the honey) and the prat de dall (variety of flora, mowing quality).

Become a donor meadow

Due to its characteristics, the Prat de Dall from Can Bec could become a perfect
donor meadow. Then, in collaboration with Prats Vius, we would collect its seeds in order to help restore other prats de dall in the area and use this location as a project showcase.

Replicate the project

After collecting enough data (2-3 years), we would love to replicate the project in other properties, making the necessary adjustments based on each propert

How to collaborate with the project

If you want to collaborate financing the project ,you can buy some of the garments that we have designed for it. You have a t-shirt and two different models of cap. The entire profit will be used to cover the expenses derived from the actions, monitoring and management of the Bee Brave project. Furthermore, you will help to gove it more visibility. Many thanks for your
collaboration.

Can Bech, The pilot Project

Near Agullana (Alt Empordà), almost near the French border, in the Les Salines Mountains, we found an abandoned Prat de Dall, now covered with poplar trees. The presence of these trees caught our attention, since they usually need humid soils. The first botanical studies made by Joan Font (a biology professor
at Girona University) confirmed our intuitions, and they exceeded our expectations. The richness of its biodiversity is outstanding. We convinced the owner to join the project and started the cleaning work to accommodate our first organic bee hives and recover the prat de dall.

Boosting biodiversity

Bee Brave starts from a basic idea. If there are flowers, then there are bees. And if there are more bees, there will be more flowers, and thus more plants. This, for thousands of years, has been one of nature’s most beautiful feedback cycles. However, excessive human ambition is changing this equilibrium and breaking the
cycle. BEE BRAVE wants to restore this cycle, even if only locally, focusing on two parts of the equation: the bees and their habitat here.

Bee Brave recovers semi-natural habitats of great biodiversity and in regression in the Empordà, called Prats de Dall (Mowing Meadows). The action focuses on the adaptation of the Prats de Dall and subsequent follow-up. This is how we ensure the health and good nutrition of the ecological hives that we have installed there. And on the other hand, these bees help with their pollination task, the recovery and maintenance of this semi-natural habitat.

“The idea is simple: give a bit back to the landscape that gives us so much. It is
a gesture of gratitude. While the landscape does not need us to be what it is,
the landscape builds us and shapes us much more than we recognize. We owe a lot to our natural environment. Being aware of that is already a first step. BEE BRAVE is Bravanariz’s humble way of going one step further.”
